Word list used by plap.uk/scrabble (words.bin) ============================================== words.bin is a gzip-compressed, front-coded list of 257,250 words of 2 to 15 letters. The list as a whole (words.bin) is made available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 licence (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/), because part of it is derived from Wiktionary. It is built from: 1. ENABLE (Enhanced North American Benchmark LExicon, enable1.txt) - public domain. 2. British spellings (colour, realise, organisation, ...) taken from the English Speller Database (ESDB, previously SCOWL): words in the size-60 British (-ise) list that are not in the size-60 American list. The size-35 and size-60 lists are also used to tag words as common / everyday, so the easier computer players stick to words most people know. The ESDB licence follows below. 3. A few newer two-letter words (QI, ZA, KI, OI, FE, DA, GI, PO, TE, EW, OK) and plurals, added by hand. 4. About 87,600 rarer words that people may play but the computer players never use: - words in the ESDB size-80 and size-95 lists (US, British, Canadian and Australian spellings) that Wiktionary also lists as English words, and - regular plurals, verb forms and comparatives of accepted words, taken from Wiktionary's inflection data. Short words (2-4 letters) were checked by hand against their Wiktionary definitions; abbreviations, symbols, letter names and similar entries were left out. A small number of ethnic slurs were removed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Custom wordlist generated from https://app.aspell.net/create using the English Speller Database (ESDB). https://wordlist.aspell.net Copyright 2000-2026 by Kevin Atkinson Permission to use, copy, modify, distribute, and sell any part of the English Speller Database (ESDB, previously known as SCOWLv2), or word lists created from it, is hereby granted without fee, provided that the above copyright notice appears in all copies and that both the above copyright notice and this notice appear in supporting documentation. The primary source of words for ESDB comes from 12dicts and ENABLE2K. Both are in the Public Domain, but Alan Beale deserves special credit as he is the author of 12dicts and a major contributor to ENABLE2K.
